Italian parliamentary team to visit Iran on May 3

An Italian parliamentary delegation is slated to pay a visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran early next month to hold talks with the countrys authorities.
Hossein Sheikholeslam, an advisor to Irans Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on international affairs, said on Monday that the Italian lawmakers are to visit the Iranian capital of Tehran on May 3 to exchange views with senior Iranian officials over issues of mutual interest.

The visit takes place at the invitation of Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Majlis. The Italian parliamentarians are also set to meet with the Iranian side of Iran-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group during their stay.

In January, an Italian parliamentary team led by senator Pier Ferdinando Casini made a similar visit to Iran and discussed the expansion of Tehran-Rome ties with senior Iranian legislators and officials.

Last December, Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino also visited Tehran, where she held talks with Iranian authorities on ways to enhance Tehran-Rome relations as well as other issues of mutual interest.

Over the past months, the Islamic Republic has received a number of parliamentary delegations from different countries in line with the countrys policy to further bolster its foreign relations.

Last week, a French parliamentary group led by the Chairman of the French Senates Finance Committee Philippe Marini arrived in Iran to discuss the promotion of economic ties between Tehran and Paris with a number of Iranian lawmakers and cabinet ministers.

In December 2013, an eight-member team from the European Parliament (EP) travelled to Tehran and met with senior Iranian legislators, including Larijani and Boroujerdi. The team was led by Tarja Cronberg, who sits on the EPs Foreign Affairs Committee.
