US must learn from Ukraine crisis: Iran cleric
A senior Iranian cleric says US leaders must learn a lesson from the ongoing crisis in Ukraine to stop fomenting coup in other countries.
The Americans should now understand that actions against nations and revolutions will not always benefit them and that they should not unseat a popular ruler to install their own stooge, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati told worshippers at the weekly Friday Prayers in Tehran.

He said Ukraines democratically-elected president, Viktor Yanukovych, was forced out of power due to the US meddling with East Europes affairs.

But it was a good experience because they (the Americans) realized that they will suffer the adverse consequences of such actions, said Jannati.

Ukrainian troops on Friday launched an offensive against pro-Russia protesters in the eastern city of Slavyansk.

Pro-Russia protests gained momentum in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine after Crimea declared independence from the former Soviet state and formally became part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.

Jannati also heaped scorn on the United States for the current situation in Egypt.

They (the United States) removed the [elected] president [Mohamed Morsi] and many innocent people were killed in the streets, he said.

On August 14 last year, more than 600 people were killed when riot police and military troops stormed Cairos Rabaa al-Adawiya Square to disperse protest camps of Morsi supporters. It was the deadliest mass killing in Egypts recent history.

Egypt has launched a heavy-handed crackdown against the supporters of Morsi following his ouster last July. Over 1,400 people have been killed and thousands have been sent to jail since then.
