Rouhani invited to visit China to attend CICA summit

China has invited Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to attend the fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
The event is scheduled to be held from May 20 to 21 in Shanghai, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang on Tuesday.

The Chinese official added that the Iranian presidents visit is scheduled for May 20-22. Tehran has not yet commented on President Rouhanis visit to China.

Qin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will also attend the conference.

CICA is a multi-national forum to enhance cooperation in a bid to promote peace, security and stability in Asia.

The idea of convening the forum was first proposed by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in October 1992.

CICA pursues its policy based on sovereign equality and non-interference in the internal affairs of member states as well as economic, social and cultural cooperation.

The forum groups 24 countries, among them Afghanistan, Azerbaijan Republic, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Nine countries and four international organizations, including the United Nations, have the observer status.

The CICA summit is convened every four years in order to conduct consultations, review the progress of CICA, and set priorities for its activities.
