Iran values ties with Azerbaijan: Defense Minister

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan says enhancement of ties between the Islamic Republic and the Republic of Azerbaijan is among Tehrans top foreign policy priorities.
The Islamic Republic of Irans foreign policy is based on expansion of relations with neighboring countries, and enhancement of ties with Baku is therefore of special importance, Dehqan said in a meeting with Azeri Defense Minister Colonel General Zakir Hasanov on the sidelines of the 3rd conference on international security in Moscow on Saturday.

The Iranian minister slammed Washingtons intervention in the internal affairs of other countries, describing the practice as one of the main factors behind instability at regional and international levels.
In order to confront such a wrong approach, everybody should work for international relations to be fair and based on mutual respect, Dehqan stated.
The senior Iranian official also called for the quick implementation of memoranda of understanding signed between Iran and Azerbaijan, noting that the political will of the two neighboring countries can play a significant role in the development of bilateral relations.

Hasanov, for his part, expressed hope that Azeri and Iranian defense ministries could further advance cooperation.

He also urged Azeri and Iranian officials to swiftly implement the accords already inked between Baku and Tehran.

On April 9, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev paid a one-day visit to the Iranian capital, where he held talks with senior Iranian authorities. During the visit, Tehran and Baku signed three memoranda of understanding as well as an agreement on building a joint hydroelectric power plant.
