Is Iran going to burn mazut to supply power to electric cars?

The Iran Project : Some news heard around about the production and import of electric cars in the next year, while there is no talk about how to supply them with electricity. An event that may eventually lead to mazut, a heavy, low-quality fuel oil, burning and worsening air pollution in big cities.

Is Iran going to burn mazut to supply power to electric cars?
According to The Iran Project, Abbas Aliabadi, the Minister of Industry, Mining and Trade, is very insists on importing electric cars from China. He considers electrification as one of the most significant strategies of the ministry and one of the major projects at the national level in the country's automobile industry.

In this regard, for the first time in December, he announced the import of 100,000 electric vehicles to the country, saying that in December, electric taxis will gradually enter Tehran, and by the end of the year, we will witness 100,000 electric taxis operating in major cities.

Import of electric cars postponed to next year

No car imported to Iran and Deputy Industry Minister for Transport Industries Manoucher Manteghi said, "Three fully-domestically produced products, designed by Iranian automobile companies, will be launched in the country's market next year."

In addition, five other products have been jointly produced with the cooperation of domestic and foreign companies, which will be offered in the country's car market next year, he added.

Where does the electricity for electric cars come from?

Electric car owners must use city electricity to charge their car batteries. A question poses itself here is: To what extent does this matter increase electricity consumption?

With a simple calculation, it became clear that if half of the country's cars are electric and have a average daily travel of 61 kilometers, the country's current electricity consumption needs will increase by 117%, Arman newspaper wrote.

On the other hand, according to statistics, the country's electricity needs are around 72,000 megawatts per day, and domestic power plants only can produce around 62,500 megawatts of electricity per day, it said.

Speaking to The Iran Project, Peyman Molavi, an economic expert, warned about the danger of burning mazut to supply electricity to electric cars.

The important issue is the energy supply for these cars, which is very worrying considering the country's electricity situation, he stated.

The Ministry of Energy has to burn mazut to supply the country's electricity needs and the use of electric cars may encourage more electricity consumption and as a result burning more mazut, the expert stressed.

According to The Iran Project, the use of electric cars today is considered a great advantage, especially in developed countries. Their low maintenance and costs, and reduction of air pollution and other environmental pollutants are the most important advantages of these cars.

However, since 14 out of 16 power plants generate electricity, 14 power plants use mazut for the production and supply of electricity, there are some concerns about the consequences of using electric cars in the public transport fleet, and the surge in the consumption of electricity and burning more mazot.
